An online workshop was conducted in collaboration with the School of Nursing / George Washington University, USA, entitled:
“Preparing Faculty for This Type of Education – TBL: Team-Based Learning,” held on Tuesday, 12 October 2021, via the Zoom platform.
Conducted by Dr. Angela McNiels and Dr. Magda Al-Banna from George Washington University, with the session chaired by Dr. Wafaa Abdulkarim Abbas from the Nursing Department, Baghdad College of Medical Sciences.
This type of education is an organized form of small-group learning that emphasizes student preparation outside the classroom and the application of knowledge within it. Students are divided into diverse teams of 5–7 members who work together on all course materials before each unit of the curriculum, preparing by reading prior to class.
In the first session of the unit, students participate in a “Readiness Assurance Process.”
They then complete the test with their group members, called the “Group Readiness Assurance Test.”
Both individual scores and group results contribute to the students’ grades. Typically, they are
Multiple-choice tests, and students often complete the group test using a sheet.
“Scantron,” marking their own answers, which reduces grading time and enhances student discussion.

After students complete the group test, the instructor encourages the teams to revisit the questions that
they answered incorrectly. The appeal process encourages students to review the course material.
and assess their understanding while defending the choices they made.
To conclude the Readiness Assurance Process, the instructor delivers a brief lecture focusing on the concepts that students struggle with the most.
Many faculty members from both the Pharmacy and Nursing Departments of the college participated in the workshop.
