This sub-department was established in 2000 as one of the main scientific disciplines in the college to contribute to the teaching of chemistry used in the medical and pharmaceutical field, linking the chemistry of drugs with therapeutic procedures, studying the relationship between the structural formula of drugs and their biological effect, as well as the structural analysis of drugs using spectroscopic analyzes. Through teaching Pharmacognosy and medicinal plants, the discipline is concerned with the graduates’ interest in the types of medicinal plants and studying them in terms of classification, shape, active ingredients and pharmacological effects and their synthesis within the plant and linking medicinal products with classified chemical compounds as well as studying other natural sources of medicines. It is also interested in making graduates able to know the importance of products derived from natural plants in the field of biomedicine, evaluating the active ingredients of plants, using methods of extraction and separating materials in a pure manner using different types of modern technology from medicinal and toxic plants in Iraq.
*This sub-department includes the following scientific laboratories
the pharmaceutical chemistry laboratory, advanced pharmaceutical analysis, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry/2, organic chemistry/3, Pharmacognosy and medicinal plants (1), and the Pharmacognosy laboratory (2)
which carries a research character because it contains many advanced equipment such as
High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) , High-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC)
(Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) ) , (freeze dry)
Postgraduate students from inside and outside the college are allowed to work in this laboratory due to their urgent need to conduct experiments, research and laboratory analyzes and use the advanced equipment available in it. Also, students of the Department of Pharmacy are permitted visit the laboratory and see how such equipment function are used.
